Welcome to Bugsy’s Rabbit Sanctuary, a small family-run rabbit rescue located in Central Florida.  Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home unwanted, abused, or neglected rabbits.  It may surprise many people to learn that there are literally thousands of unwanted rabbits in the United States today.  That’s why our goal is to mitigate the many problems these animals face – not only by saving rabbits, but also by educating the public about our cause.  Rabbits are incredibly affectionate, playful, and rewarding animals that deserve to be protected and loved.  We invite you to explore our website, learn about our organization, and support our passion for saving rabbits in need.

Why Do Rabbits Need Rescuing?

Did you know that there are literally thousands of unwanted rabbits in the United States today?  Most people are aware of the many dogs and cats in need of rescue in our communities, but the issues rabbits face are rarely publicized as widely.  In addition, accurate and reliable information regarding how to properly care for pet bunnies is scarce, and these animals are often misrepresented as cuddly, short-lived, “beginner” pets for children.  On the contrary – rabbits require a very specific diet of hay and leafy greens, crave exercise and human interaction, and can live well over 10 years if given proper care.  Due to this lack of education among the general public, parents who had bought bunnies for their children as cute Easter gifts soon realize that rabbits are much more time-consuming and expensive then they originally thought.  As a result, these bunnies are all too often “dumped” – sold on Craigslist to suspicious buyers, brought to animal shelters where they are frequently euthanized, or even “set free” into the wild to fend for themselves (something they cannot do).

Statistics show that 95% of animals bought at Easter will die by the age of one year.

Just like dogs and cats, rabbits can be abandoned, neglected, and abused – but just like dogs and cats, rabbits are also affectionate, playful, intelligent, and energetic.  They form strong bonds with their human families, and can become antisocial or depressed if not given the attention they need.

What Do Rabbit Rescues Do?

Bugsy’s Rabbit Sanctuary takes in unwanted domestic rabbits in our community, rehabilitates them, and finds them new homes.  We receive bunnies from private individuals, veterinary clinics, animal shelters, and other rescues.  Some of these rabbits are in good health, but just need a little TLC and socialization before they are ready to be adopted.  Other rabbits come to us in horrific conditions – we have rescued rabbits that have been attacked by other animals, involved in hoarding situations, and even physically abused by their previous owners.  We ensure that all of our rabbits receive the treatment they need by exotic veterinarians, but we also spend time socializing with them and helping them to trust people.  Finally, our rabbits are posted online for adoption, where we thoroughly screen potential owners, and work to match the right family with the right bunny.

Visit our “Hoppy” Endings page to view our success stories!

We also work to provide the general public with proper rabbit care information, and advocate for our cause so more people will become passionate about protecting bunnies.  Education, through public outreach events, online information, and school and nursing home visits, is a key component of our mission.

Thank you for visiting our website!
